US Flag Display & Care

Displaying the Flag

  • Display the U.S. Flag from sunrise to sunset.
  • If flown at night, ensure the flag is properly illuminated.
  • Only display the flag in fair weather unless using an all-weather flag.
  • Hoist the flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously.
  • When displayed with other flags on the same pole, the U.S. Flag must always be at the top.
  • On a wall or in a window, the union (blue field with stars) should be at the top and to the flag’s own right (observer’s left).
  • When flown with other national flags, all should be at the same height and of equal size.
  • Indoors, place the flag in a prominent location, such as near an entrance or on a platform to the speaker’s right.

Flag Etiquette & Respect

  • Never let the flag touch the ground, floor, water, or merchandise.
  • Do not use the flag as clothing, bedding, or drapery.
  • The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally—always aloft and free.
  • Do not mark, draw on, or attach anything to the flag.
  • The flag should not be used for advertising or on disposable items.
  • When raising or lowering the flag, face the flag, place your right hand over your heart, and remove hats.

Care & Maintenance

  • Store the flag in a clean, dry place.
  • Replace the flag if it becomes tattered, faded, or torn.
  • Retire worn flags respectfully, preferably by burning in a dignified manner. Local organizations like the American Legion or VFW can assist.

Legal Considerations

  • The Federal Flag Code provides guidelines but does not impose penalties for civilians.
  • State laws may add requirements or penalties.
  • The Flag Code is considered voluntary for private citizens.

Special Occasions & Half-Staff

  • Display the flag on national and state holidays, and other special occasions.
  • Follow official proclamations for flying the flag at half-staff.
  • When lowering to half-staff, first hoist to the peak for a moment, then lower to half-staff.

Show your respect for the U.S. Flag and the values it represents by following these best practices at your home or business.
